Infinity is a fantastic game and is well worth picking up, especially if you have a buddy that is on the fence about taking the Infinity dive as well. If not, there's always a demand for halving these sets - just look to trade groups.
There's no better place to start than one of their 2 player starter "Operation:" boxes. The sculpts are amazing, and relatively free of mold lines, though there are a few mold "plugs" in not so strategic places. A good pair of clippers, some files and or sanding sticks will make short work of them though.
Like the previous boxed sets, Red Veil includes a set of basic rules, that are broken down over the course of several missions, so you are only learning a few new rules at each one. This incremental learning process really helps with Infinity, and they smoothly pave the way into learning the Infinity rules. There is a supplemental book with new rules and missions designed for the Beyond Red Veil (which I recommend picking up as well) box that further aid your segue into the main rules.
The terrain included with the Red Veil box is great. Made of heavy card stock, they are designed to fold "flat" for easy transport and quick set up just like the terrain from Operation Ice Storm and the USAriadna Army Pack, however this terrain takes it one step further with the addition of overhead walkways that can link two or more of the main buildings.
As mentioned already, this boxed set is simply an incredible value, especially here on Gamenerdz so look into it.
Now there are two Cons to this set, but they are in no way deal breakers. First, the map. It would be really great if it were actually half size (instead of 24" x 36"), so we could get another set of Neon Lotus terrain and actually make a 4x4" table map. I get it, this is just supposed to get you into the game, but the map and terrain are really well done for starting out and not all homes/hobby stores, will have terrain or maps that are suitable for full games of Infinity initially.
The second con, is both of the included armies have template weapons as standard equipment (shotguns and flamers), yet no weapon templates are included on the token sheet nor instructions for template fire in the abbreviated rules. Template fire is a very simple topic - surely they could have covered that even in the basic rules. Of course you can go to Infinity's site, find, and print off a set of templates; but if you're going to do an inclusive starter set, be inclusive.
Again, these are definitely not deal breakers, just constructive criticism for the next "Operation:X" box set.
I've been puttering around with infinity for several years now and whenever they first announced a third edition I was a bit nervous having come from 40K and knowing what that can mean. I have to say that the way corvus belli has handled the transition to N3 by comparison has been very positive. I purchased operation ice storm when it came out with the pre-order exclusive figure and was quite pleased with it. I purchased red Veil because I play Haqqislam and figured that I could sell what I didn't want from this.
Just like ice storm everything about this set is high quality. However, unlike ice storm, the exclusive figure is much more useful. Rather than being limited to being basically an overglorified token the exclusive in this one is actually a useful figure to any faction because it's a mercenary. Now I did not get the Le figure with this because I did not pre-order it unfortunately so I cannot comment on it. However, the models included are extremely nice resculpts. The Ghulam Infantry are incredibly well done. They could be used outside of infinity in any near future scifi or possibly even modern Black Ops type game as well. Aside from the big Power Armor guy pretty much all of the included Haqqislam could easily be near future or modern figures depending on tech but you could probably call most of that something from a Tom Clancy novel LOL.
If you're looking to start Infiniti or play either of the factions in this set definitely pick it up.
Infinity is a game with a steep learning curve, and this boxed set is the to smooth it out a bit. It contains all you need to get started, and that includes two family equally matched play sets and an abbreviated rule book. Once you have mastered this, you'll have figured out if you want to get deeper into the game and can start delving deeper into the rules and adding new pieces. Here's a hint, you will want to.
great set to get you started. quick delivery from GN too!
Great starter for anyone looking to start with a friend or to expand a collection. Minis are very well cast with only minimal mold lines and clean up. Rulebook is sturdy and eases players into new concepts. I do wish they delved further into advanced rules such as hacking but establishes the foundation for more rules. Great buy and even better price here at GameNerdz!
This is a great set for beginners looking to start Infinity. This comes with everything you need. Models, rules, terrain and even dice.
The title says it all - this starter pack is a great introduction for players new to Infinity. I would argue that it has even greater potential for expansion over Operation Icestorm, but both packs are a great buy!
